Helping deliver the world’s largest battery scheme at Carrington, Manchester

on 4 August 2023

We were pleased to see the news that Carlton Power, the UK independent energy infrastructure development company, has secured planning permission for the world’s largest battery energy storage scheme (BESS), located at the Trafford Low Carbon Energy Park in Carrington, Greater Manchester.  The permission is for a 1.04GW (1,040MW / 2,080MWh) battery project incorporating two hours of electricity storage.  This BESS scheme will strengthen the security and resilience of the energy system in the North West of England, and support the energy transition and the significant growth of renewable power generation in the region, including offshore wind and interconnectors linking the UK and Ireland.

The team at Cambridge Power has been working closely with Carlton Power for a number of years, providing support with design layout, planning, and technical advice as well as introducing potential financing partners. We will now continue to work with Carlton to ensure the timely delivery of this project to financial close and then assist in taking forward the construction of the BESS which is expected to begin in the first quarter of next year (2024) with a view to it entering commercial operation in the final quarter of 2025.

Thanks to our Design, Planning, and Technical teams for their continued support on this project and watch this space for further news as the BESS progresses into construction over the next six months.
